Georgia Theodora Hale ( June 25 , 1900 – June 7 , 1985 ) was an American silent film actress. In 1922, Georgia Hale won the Miss Chicago contest and went to New York to become a stage actress. But she was unsuccessful there and moved to Hollywood , where in 1925 she starred in her first film, The Salvation Hunters (directed by Josef von Sternberg ). In cinema, she is best known for her role in Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush (1925). The film made Georgia Hale a star for a time, but her career declined sharply after the advent of talkies. The 1931 talkie The Lightning Warrior ended Hale's acting career, becoming her last film. However, Chaplin invited the actress to play a cameo role in City Lights (1931), where she replaced Virginia Cherrill in one of the scenes , who left for a hairdresser without asking during filming. In the late 1920s, she became involved in real estate investments in Southern California, amassing a large fortune, and for a time, she was partnered with Charlie Chaplin. In the 1983 documentary film The Unknown Chaplin , Georgia Hale spoke fondly of her time working with him. She also wrote a book about it, which was not published until 1995, 10 years after her death. Read More
